Finn to the fore
Recent results in the Finn class have confirmed the strength and quality of the HIT finn mast. This high tech carbon wonder mast is engineered and manufactured by Ceilidh Composite Technologies and with results spread across the top ten at all international regattas in 2010 it seems to be the mast to use this year. The whaleboat design commissioned from Olivier van Meer includes curved spars manufactured at the Ceilidh facility in Hellevoetsluis. With a design brief including the sail control systems, as well as discovering a practical solution to avoid expensive custom plug manufacture, the challenge was met within a short delivery time. After first sea trials the customer requested that the mast be extended while retaining the curvature in the spar to enable a larger rig to be used. The project is unusual in that the spars are all curved, but still the sail should be hoisted with a conventional gaff system.
